[9 Feb] Quality Education

Can government schools in India be developed so that they can give quality education or such a case is not possible at all?

Literacy is one of the key factors which contributes to a country’s development. India is still lacking to provide adequate education to its people. Children, being the future of India, need to get formal training in a school. Private schools are costly and since the major region of India is poor, private schools are not affordable. So, the Indian government has taken an initiative and launched a public school under ‘Sarw Shiksha Abhiyan'. However, we have seen the condition, training, learning and system of school is much below the expectation.

The biggest question arises - why even after sufficient funding and initiative, government schools failed to provide quality education. Teachers’ unavailability, poor hygiene, and an unequipped classroom are some of the common problems at the end of the school’s service. To attract students the government has also initiated free food but we all are aware that the quality of food is substandard. If we look at the records and surveys, we will find that corruption is mostly responsible for all these causes.

Looking at the poor result for all these years we may be inclined to stop these services and move to private education. If Delhi and Tamil Nadu can show improvement and exceptional results then it is definitely possible for all states as well as for the central government to run these schools and give quality education. We might rethink our strategy. Instead of luring students to come to school, we can lure the state government. We can incentivise heavily to those states which show exceptional results such as incentives if 10 – 20 students qualify for IIT. This may motivate the state to push for result-oriented work. We need to create an ecosystem where state governments compete over the quality of education.

So we can safely conclude that it is possible to provide quality education in a government school if we change our strategies.
