[15 Feb] We all keep talking about ‘Saving Mother Earth’.

Some people think it’s not the Earth that needs to be saved, but it us humans. What do you think?

Formed billions of years ago, Earth has gone through drastic changes over time. The important components of the earth, geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, have changed significantly. Humans too have evolved over millions of years. From only being just hunter-gatherers, they are have evolved to become the most superior species on earth.

Humans have developed technologies, upgraded lifestyles, improved communication and done many other discoveries which have uplifted them and made them control many things on the earth. In the process of these developments, humans have made vital changes to the earth’s ecosystem.

If we look at the atmospheric changes, we can see a lot of pollution and a rise in the earth’s temperature. Multiple factories have been set up that are generating job opportunities and lifestyle facilities. This expansion has led humans to shift from rural, which is significantly natural, to urban areas, resulting in deforestation, excess extraction of resources like minerals and water which ultimately led to pollution. These factories release a lot of harmful gases into the air and the water.

Water pollution is one of the major reasons for the changes in the hydrosphere. It not only distorts the aquatic ecosystem but also pollutes drinking water which leads to many diseases like malaria, diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid.

Due to pollution and significant change in lifestyle such as – food habits, sleep cycle, people are suffering from many diseases. Cancer, heart attack and blood pressure are some of the very common problems these days. A natural disaster is another area where we have lost thousands of lives. Floods, landslides, earthquakes, cyclones and droughts are some among many other natural disasters that happen due to environmental changes. One example of this would be the rise in the earth’s temperature leading to the melting of glaciers and causing floods.

As a whole, we can say that both earth and humans are suffering and moving to the exit. Since both are shaken and in a critical situation, the question arises who should we save? In medicine, there is a difference between treating the symptoms and curing the conditions. For example, a broken wrist really hurts. But painkillers are temporary and only cures the symptom and you need a different treatment for the permanent heal.

In the same way, if we put our efforts to save humans, we would not be able to make a permanent solution. There is a high chance that to cure one we will generate a couple of more problems. Since the earth is the platform where humans have developed and evolved, it will be more effective and efficient to put our efforts into saving the mother earth. We should together work towards the development of a healthy earth with clean air, water, potential soil and a biosphere. This overall aspect of development will ultimately save the humans and uplift their life.
